Salmon Types by Season

The early runs around June produce about 16,000 salmon on average, but going into July, the runs peak at around 40,000. The Copper River is known for Coho salmon, sockeye salmon and Chinook salmon around the middle of May. Because of the strong rapids found in the Copper River, salmon caught here have an abundance of fat and oil, which makes them have a superior taste compared to salmon caught elsewhere.
Kodiak Island Fishing
Kodiak Island is a legendary spot for Alaska Salmon Fishing in a remote location. Crowds of people are sparse here and it’s more likely to meet a bear for competition than fellow anglers. King salmon are available between the first of June to the first week or so in July. Timing for this fishing spot is important for Chinook as half the fish have moved up the river by the second week in June and as much as 90 percent are gone by the time it hits July. King salmon range between 20 and 25 pounds, while four to seven-pound sockeye make their appearance between June and August. A big silver run generally happens between mid-August and late September.
Ocean Fishing
Another option for Alaska Salmon Fishing is the Pacific Ocean. The king salmon fishing season kicks into high gear between May and June. In the months of July, August and early September, anglers will find the silver salmon run in full swing. Silvers caught at this time can weigh as much as 126 pounds. Saltwater salmon fishing in Alaska is well-known for producing some huge fish.
