Cook Inlet Halibut Fishing

Surrounded by forests and majestic mountain peaks, Cook Inlet offers visitors and residents world-class halibut fishing and outdoor recreation opportunities. As one of the prime fishing grounds in Alaska, it also has halibut, salmon, and rockfish during the fishing season.

Best Months for Halibut Fishing

Halibut fishing season runs from mid-May to October 1st. All these months are good fishing and come with different fishing opportunities for each month; we catch pacific cod, rockfish, ling cod, king salmon, and silver salmon which are abundant during these different months. We offer various halibut fishing packages in Cook Inlet and provide all fishing gear and lodging. Your lodging comes with full kitchens if you want to cook or go to restaurants a few minutes away for chef-prepared meals.

When you come in mid-May, you can catch halibut, pacific cod, and king salmon, and possibly see whales. The peak season for halibut fishing is in June, July, and August. However, May and September are many clients’ favorite times as it will be less crowded and still have good fishing, but it’s a little cooler, and there is a chance that the weather could be too rough to go fishing but that can happen any time of the season.

Why Visit the Cook Inlet Area?

You’ll be spoiled for choice when at Cook Inlet. Easily accessible, it offers many outdoor activities that delight locals and visitors alike. These include bear viewing, whale-watching cruises, beachcombing, and beach boat launching. Lodges also abound, including RVs, remote cabins, and 5-star fishing accommodations. Go to the Northwest side and enjoy backpacking, hiking, and fly-out fishing for salmon.

Why Fish the Cook Inlet Area?

Cook Inlet gives you access to freshwater rivers and saltwater fisheries, which are abundant with five fish species, including halibut and different types of salmon. Homer, a smaller port in Cook Inlet, is the halibut capital of the world, so you have no reason not to fish at Cook Inlet. The best way to experience halibut fishing is by booking a fishing package, ensuring you have everything, including gear and booked accommodations.

Environmental Considerations in Halibut Fishing

Strictly adhere to catch limits in your area to help maintain fish populations, and follow slot limits to protect mature fish. When you catch a halibut, handle it carefully using gloves, and if you release it, do it quickly. Make sure also to use proper gear when fishing for halibut. Using circle hooks for catching and fish descenders to lower the fish back is recommended. Don’t go halibut fishing outside the designated season to avoid losing your fishing license. They prohibit fishing when out of season to protect the halibut population.
