Bears are undoubtedly some of the most beautiful animals found in Alaska. Chances are you’ve seen bears at some point, such as in a zoo, but never in such a natural, breathtaking environment. Our Alaska Fish On Charters team loves seeing the expressions of visitors who see bears for the first time in the wild. It’s one of the reasons we make it a point to highlight their presence during our guided bear-viewing opportunities.
What Kind of Bears Are in Alaska?
It’s easy to love the bears in Alaska, and chances are you can spot one of the three kinds that frequent The Last Frontier. During your trip, keep an eye out for brown bears, black bears, and grizzly bears.
Best Places to See Bears on the Kenai Peninsula
The Kenai Peninsula is a popular spot in Alaska to look for bears in the wild. You may even see one right outside your door if you stay in a fishing lodge.
One popular spot to look for bears is in the Katmai National Park and Preserve. If you want to check out what the bears are up to in the national park before your visit, you can look for them on the National Park Service Katmai Bear Cams. See them frolicking about with their cubs, trying to catch fish, and engaging in daily walks.
When to See Bears in Alaska
You have a good chance of seeing bears in Alaska during the spring and summer. Pay close attention to areas near bodies of water, as that’s where bears tend to hunt for food. Always keep your eyes open, and remain on the lookout for bears and other wild animals, even if you’re with a group.
How to Stay Safe When Seeing Bears
Bears may look friendly, but these wild animals get defensive when they feel it’s necessary, especially if their cubs are nearby. Indicating to them you’re not a threat is essential, and understanding how to keep yourself safe if you spot a bear could save your life. Tips to keep in mind include:
- Remain calm.
- Don’t run, scream or cry.
- Stand in one place while waving your arms.
We give you a refresher about safety tips before heading out for our guided bear viewing.
Best Thing to Wear When Viewing Bears
What to wear while viewing bears depends on the season. Temperatures in Alaska range significantly and by area. It’s typically beneficial to wear a coat or jacket, even during summer, since the weather can easily turn chilly, windy or rainy.
For example, July is the warmest month in Kenai, and January is the coldest. In July, the average high temperature is 63 degrees Fahrenheit, and the average low is 49 degrees Fahrenheit. The average Kenai high is 25 degrees Fahrenheit in January, and the average low is 13 degrees Fahrenheit.
As you can see, Kenai doesn’t usually see stereotypically warm temperatures. Sporting proper gear ensures your safety and comfort regardless of the season you’re visiting.
