Fascinating Lingcod Facts

Lingcod are unique reef fish known for their mottled gray, brown, or greenish coloring. Although most lingcod caught in Alaska range from 8-16 years old, this long-living fish can live for 26 years or more. The average weight for Alaskan lingcod is 40-55 pounds, but they can get pretty big, with some even weighing over 85 pounds.

Offshore lingcod fishing is popular, but lingcod are technically reef fish attracted to rocky structures. This means large lingcod swim in relatively shallow coastal waters.

Lingcod are easy fish to hook due to their aggressive nature. Many fishermen aiming for rockfish or halibut often catch lingcod by mistake, as they’re drawn to the same lures and may even try to eat smaller fish already on the hook.

Despite their tough look, lingcod has mild, flaky white meat that’s great for grilling or baking. Interestingly, about 1 in 5 lingcod have blue flesh. It doesn’t change the taste, but it makes for a unique dining experience.
